It’s been a good start to spring after a chaotic winter. Things are picking up with every week that passes and signs are positive. Although not fully running as we know it, the industry is at least offering more work than 3 months ago. Although we have seen budgets at lower rates than normal, the hope is that more change will come at this closing stage of the year as channels and media platforms chase new content and various industries get back to business. Here’s a cheers to taking on the final three months of the year. May we all build bridges and new connections in the various avenues in the world of multimedia and entertainment.

Ungalahli’imbo yakho ngoPhoyiyana"

“Don't throw away your precious stone for a worthless thing”

FINAL THOUGHT

By Jennis Williamson

Hi all

In September we launched our KwaZulu-Natal division in partnership with Society 5.0 and welcomed Fundi Zwane and Justin Nanak to the team.

For those who know me, would always hear the quote “A dream without a plan is a wish”. KZN was a dream, we work endlessly with the team in Durban to strategise, envision, do research and launch. We are excited for this partnership.

We have also launched a viral campaign in collaboration with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture called #KindnessContagion.

The one thing we as South Africans can do is thrive during challenge. We have been bombarded with so much negativity on social media and we chose to spread positivity. May kindness go viral, and may kindness be contagious. We are excited for you to join the movement.

I am passionate about the industry, and about the Talent-ETC brand but above all grateful

I will forever look back at 2020 as the year we cemented relationships, when I became a first time dad, when I got to know my team exceptionally well, where I took more risks than ever, where I learned that the competition can be competitive (constructively), and at times cruel and vindictive. But, in the end, to smile.

Upward on Onward!

The month of September is upon us as we welcome spring with warmer weather just around the corner and with it many more productions.

After a testing period we are shifting into a higher gear this month. With a number of productions on the horizon, September to December will be a sprint to the finish line for the rest of the year. There is a serious need to make up for lost time as we continue tracking the leads that come in.

Crew-Etc has been busy with an amazing initiative that we can hopefully share more of next month.

Good luck to everyone this September and please continue following health protocols on each set you work on.

FINAL THOUGHT

By Jennis Williamson

It is SPRING! We are in level 2 and it feels like some sense of normal routine has finally approached.

Quick updates:

  • The AGENCY team is working overtime to manage our current workflow.
  • TALENT THEATRE is creating a massive buzz and allowing the arts to grow even more.
  • Our updated VOICE section on our website is proving that less is more.
  • We received a government grant for a new online SOCIAL-ETC campaign, spreading awareness and kindness.
  • Our CREW division is bursting out of its seams with great placements on international projects.
  • We are in pre-prod with an amazing project and excited to put on my PRODUCING hat once again.
  • We are in talks with new partners in taking the TETC brand to new heights.

Although everyone is extremely tired and 99% of all actors feels they have been abused by the system, things are turning around at a rapid pace.

This however is not the time to relax, now we need to work harder and focus more than ever and fill whatever holes the Covid-19 lockdown has created.

Writer Margaret Atwood said “In spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.” As we already smell like the proverbial dirt from constantly planting ideas and dreams, may September bring more hope, life and fruition.

August – The last month of Winter

We are into the last month of a cold winter and what a season it’s been. I must say it has felt a bit like a season of Game of Thrones with its winter doom and gloom. The overall havoc caused by the pandemic has disrupted the lives of millions and the television and film industry is no different.

But alas, there is hope. Spring is around the corner and there are a number of productions that are going to start pre-production, apart from the usual suspects that have already been back filming for a while. Drama’s, reality, as well as commercials, some that have already begun filming again. Although still no films on the horizon.

We’re going to keep plugging away and keep the faith that more and more productions will get going again. The landscape might have changed, but there will always be a need for locally created content. We are seeing a slow rise on our books and hopefully the traction keeps growing.

Stay safe out there.

Hi all

We are celebrating Women’s Month in August and what a great time to focus on the positive in these crazy times.

I salute the lovely women part of the ETC family, from the artists, clients, crew members, influencers and especially Precious and Thulani.

I salute your strength and courage and your eagerness to take over the world. The best way to describe the women in my life is a quote by Atticus;

We are very excited to officially launch “The Talent Theatre” – an industry initiative to create work and content for our South African performers. This provides an opportunity not only for performers and actors, but only crewmembers and presenters.

Like and follow @thetalenttheatrepresents for all the information and exciting news!

The industry is starting to pick up after Stage 5 Lockdown. Castings still mainly focus on self-tapes and Zoom-sessions for auditions, but we are hoping that our actors can do in-house auditions for casting directors soon. For tips on recording the perfect self-tape, I’ve found an article online for more information: https://corp.castingnetworks.com/self-tape-solution-during-covid-19/

On the 18th of July South Africa will be celebrating the birthday of the late Nelson Mandela. How will you be spending your 67 minutes to give back to the community?

CREW-ETC

By Frankie Opperman

As we head into July, we look to the future with hopeful eyes. June has been tough on most people, but at least systems have started switching on again. Post production work has been a saving grace for some, as well as the ability to work in a multitude of different skillsets. Adapting and upskilling yourself to take on new challenges has never been more important.

At Crew-Etc we’ve now introduced a medical protocol officer role for on-site visits based on what the need out there is. There have been a number of incidents on various shoots which just goes to show how easily a production can be halted. Extreme care should be taken in and around the workspace, as well as in your own capacity. One lapse of judgement can land your entire production and countless co-workers in hot soup.

The industry is far from operating at optimum capacity, but we are ready to jump and help wherever needed. Please stay safe out there.

We are thankful that various exciting brands agreed to be part of this project. It truly is an initiative that would help and back the entertainment industry. It’s unique in its own way and we know it will work.

We will be filming once a month for the next 4 months, of which there would be 4 performances per day. The first set of 4 performers on the will be filmed on the 16th of July.

We can’t give away too much yet, however the lineup for the launch month (August 2020) will be coming for you from all angles. Laughing, crying, kids entertainment and some local music currently top of the charts is heading your way. And the tickets will sold at R100 per show. Every performer and crew member are all working on a “Door Deal” and non gets upfront payment.

The ticket splits will work as follow:

35%  Production Split
12%  / R12: Hosting site and ticketing
2% / R2: Donation to Artist Related Charity Fund
43% / R43 :Performers & Hosts
8%.  R8: Marketing

If you look at the breakdown, you’ll see that R100 is split into 5 categories of which all have various sub categories, is not that expensive.

The Team so far:

JC Snooke – Life etc – Director / Producer
Jennis Williamson – Talent Etc – Line producer
Christian Botha – Brickwolf Creatives – DOP / Gear / Art dep
Theo Scheepers – DIT / Editor

FINAL THOUGHT

By Jennis Williamson

Since the beginning of my career as an agent and producer, I have at all times been obsessed with stats and trends, I closely follow international industry trends and this keeps us a step ahead in preparation and execution of all strategies.

Yet, in contradiction to international trends, this was the first month of June in my career where we did not find a moment to relax…it has been busy, manic, exhausting yet fruitful. We have had amazing highs and difficult lows. We have not taken a break since lockdown initiated in March, and we are not intending to slow down.

  • Our strategies are in place, we focus on our home first, meaning our artists first, and
    only then the entire industry.
  • We have launched Talent Cares to assist our actors in this time of need as you cannot always depend on external sources.
  • We have exceeded our goals and expectations in all departments; agency, crew,
    production and influencers
  • We are working on external and competitive products and services to reignite
    passion for our industry.
  • Above all, we find time to laugh in the office, as at the end, if there is no joy, there is
    no life.

May your July be filled with HOPE and LAUGHTER.

The only way is up.

What a crazy few months these have been. I’m sure everyone is feeling quite gatvol. It seems though, that there is light at the end of the tunnel. There have been a number of positive signs of movement in the last few weeks. The soaps and telenovelas are back to work, although in completely new surroundings.

On our side, post work has started picking up and it also seems like a number of new productions are gearing up to start filming. Still not a lot of “big” dramas or films, as production houses eye the horizons.

We must now learn to work within the perimeters that have been given to us and keep our minds positive. There might be much less work, but at least the media industry is slowly getting back up on its feet. It’s more than a lot of other industries can say. Stay focused and be vigilant. We must not let our guard down.

SOCIAL-ETC

The use of social media has changed completely over the last couple of months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Artists needed to make use of their online platforms to generate an income by doing shows online, presenting online classes and more. Influencers have also been gaining a lot from this new way of social media use. Products and brands now only use influencers to boost their online sales and to promote their brand.

Recently we partnered up with Law For All and some of our influencers like Nadia Beukes, Candice Modiselle, Kyle Clark and Tsholo Phiri was involved. If you would like to get involved with Social-ETC, contact us at social@talent-etc.co.za for more info.

THE “NEW NORMAL” AS PEOPLE LIKE TO CALL IT, IS HERE AND WE ARE READY TO EMBRACE IT.

Due to the restrictions and prohibition of social gatherings, and even with the lockdown lifted, consumers will be hesitant to attend big gatherings, however, we will make this work.

How?

By hosting a online “Talent show” every week on a new platform called: “The Talent Theatre Presents”

This show will be hosted by a different presenter every week with three performers in every show within the same category.

What makes this different to any other “Talent shows”? It’s about showcasing your Talent & Entertainment.

  • This is not a competition! No judges, No leader board, no elimination!
  • This is where any type of performer can showcase what they have to offer to the world
  • Rappers
  • Dancers
  • Acoustic singers
  • Presenters
  • Poetry writers & Readers
  • Voice Over artists can tell stories to kids from a
    book, with animated “Voices”
  • One man / women shows
  • Kids entertainment shows

For a low rate ticket consumers can watch the talent that is on show that day.In the older days people worked on a door deal to bring in profit as a performer – we are kind of going the same route by splitting the ticket sales. The consumer can buy a ticket and get access to an online platform and watch the show from home with 3 performers that showcase a specific theme IE: Singers, Dancers etc.
What makes this unique is that the performer, production company and presenter must market their show to get sales as this is how they would receive their share.

If everything goes accordingly, The Talent Theatre will be launched in July 2020.

If you want to get involved or take part in this, contact me at jc@lifeinabulb.tv

FINAL THOUGHT

By Jennis Williamson

Hi all

Trust you are well, and safe.

It is semi-ridiculous to think that it is June 2020 already.

With some of our actors and crew members back on set, insane safety regulations not to mention an emotionally tired South Africa, change is definitely in the air. One of my favourite quotes is IMPROVISE, ADAPT and overcome. This quote has had more meaning in the last couple of weeks than ever. We are choosing to overcome.

Covid-19 will from now on always be part of our vocabulary, but we have the power to remove it’s sting when it comes to our own personal lives and career.

We are excited for the new clients that joined our team during the lockdown, we are excited to introduce some new established faces to our books, we are excited to see our younger divisions grow at the speed of light, but above all I am proud of you, our talented artists, and our clients for keeping positive.

Sending you love and light

Self-tapes are the new way to go! As we went into lockdown amid the Covid-19 pandemic, every casting director has turned to self-tapes as the new way to audition. This process is making everything a lot easier for both the actor and casting director, as well as quicker. It saves quite some time and money, especially in these tough times.

But as everything in life, there are also a few rules to follow when recording your audition. So always remember to keep the techniques in mind when filming.

Being in lockdown we have learned the process of doing everything online, and there we at Talent-ETC will be hosting a few online master classes in May.

Be sure to check out our social media platforms for all of the information.

Hanging in there

What a time it’s been indeed. Covid-19 has taken away our normal way of life and it’s been replaced with an uncertain future to the likes of which we as a human race have not seen. Now as we all well know, the life of a freelancer is pretty much always rather uncertain, but this is on a next level and the biggest concern is that no one has the answers. When will we work again? Which productions can film again? When can the world travel again? We are all waiting with bated breaths.

You don’t need me to tell you that Crew-Etc has been immensely affected by the pandemic, but who hasn’t? Although there have been a couple of editors in post, it’s frankly been terrible.

The only thing to do now is to think out of the box as much as one can and try and be pro-active if at all possible, which is much easier said than done. Not every person is an entrepreneur at heart, has secret ninja skills or can create magic out of thin air. So if you can’t, you can;t, BUT try your best to just hang in there. It’s vital to keep up your mental and physical health. Reach out to family or friends if you need to and if you can. There are many people who want to help and they might just have something to offer or even just an emotional connection of some sorts if that’s what you need.

This will end and hopefully the industry will experience a mini boom and a demand for fresh local content. We’re going to hit the ground running as soon as this thing lifts.. Just make sure you’ve got your running shoes on.. It’s going to be one hell of a race.

SOCIAL-ETC

By Kyle Clark

Our online industry is flooded with content creators and normal consumers on a rampage to over flood us with content and a weird narrative that we all need to either believe or not believe. Choosing to self improve over choosing to take time to relax is the decision that everyone online is borderline trying to control on social media.

I believe that in this time of uncertainty its important to believe how you feel, its important to feel good about yourself by doing what you think will make you feel good. Even though we are constantly clouded by how ‘’ exciting ‘’ most peoples lives look during this lockdown. Remember they are too be looked at as beacons of hope for your everyday choices and not to be frowned upon.

The industry is also over crowded at the moment with so much content being pumped out that we are currently being left with no direction of where to go next.

LIFE-ETC

By JC Snooke

As the entire globe is holding its breath to see if there would be more extensions on the lockdowns in their respective countries, interesting, and creative things are happening in the entertainment world.

Creative briefs changed overnight from lavish ideas, to smaller ideas with bigger impact. Smaller crews are used to execute projects and stock footage sales are at an all-time high as people are now forced to be more creative.

Great example of this change can be seen on Talenthouse.com. Tens of thousands of artists all across the world have come together to support the United Nations and WHO’s efforts to combat the spread of COVID-19.

https://unitednations.talenthouse.com

May this boost in creativity take us back to the root of entertainment, to make people feel better about themselves again.

FINAL THOUGHT

By Jennis Williamson

Hi all

Hopefully by the time you read this we will be back in the offices and our artists are returning to an idea of normal.

Normal…not a word we will know for a very long time, but we will be working together to find a “new normal”

To work from home takes more discipline than you think, to manage and communicate with staff over all forms of technology is frustrating. To fill in one more form to make sure the company survives Covid-19 is unnerving, to cry one more tear over actors that are struggling is gut-wrenching, but still, to walk out of this and know we are healthy and alive, makes this journey a little bit better.

I am proud that my team was so extremely pro-active during lockdown, we launched a campaign, we showcased our talent during lockdown, our artists shared messaged of hope, we created new partnerships, we reworked our strategy on a weekly basis, we kept standing up although we wanted just crawl up into a tight spot.

In a heartbeat my list of ‘important things’ changes to basic necessities, less is more. At then end, I am stronger than ever, we are stronger than ever, but above all, we are #StrongerTogether.

I am excited for the rest of 2020.

Love, light an blessings

TALENT-ETC

By Eben Brink

With COVID-19 forcing South Africa on lockdown and almost everyone being at home, this is the perfect time to sharpen up some skills, take part in online workshops, learn a new accent or perhaps even a new language. There are a lot of free online courses on Youtube, but if you prefer something more educational, visit www.udemy.com

With the current COVID-19 lockdown is South Africa, it has the potential to drastically halter the economy and sales, and seeing that everyone is self-isolating, your brand can allow us to bring the consumers to your platforms during this challenging period.

Talent-ETC has launched a campaign called “A Lockdown Initiative”.

Seeing that everyone is taking part in the national lockdown, this will force the statistics of social media to increase even more. Consumers are being forced to shop online and this is the perfect opportunity for you.

Be Proactive

This is an extremely difficult time we all find ourselves in. After a bright start to March, work has dried up immensely during this COVID-19 period and productions are either cancelling or postponing at an alarming rate. With all the uncertainty, it is difficult to gauge when things will return to normal. There are currently a number of our people working in post-production, which seem to be less affected than crew working on set. But it’s still much less than usual.

In the meantime, we all have to try and stay busy and not get downed by the situation. It’s all easy to say, but being proactive now, will benefit you when the gates are open again. If you have extra time on hand, now is the moment to utilise it for that concept you’ve been working on, that CV you’re updating, or that showreel that you’ve been putting off for months.

Also, it’s up to us all to look out for one another. Let’s check in on those we know are going through tough times. Offer support where possible, even if it’s just a listening ear. We’re all just part of one big dysfunctional industry family, so let’s hold hands together. Ok, maybe not hold hands, but you get the picture.

SOCIAL-ETC

By Kyle Clark

As we move into this trying and very unknown time of our lives, we look to where we can monetize and share some light on where the economy is regarding moving towards a digital transition. We are excited to see a force of businesses, brands, products and services moving towards an online platform which is what was needed for our economy to take the online world a little bit more serious. Now that we are here and maybe not in pleasant circumstances, it’s up to us to make sure that we quality control our content but also be smart in how we go about influencing in future. We as SOCIAL-ETC are excited about where we are heading and to deliver quality campaigns and content going forward. Being the driving force that online content and online consumption is the new way to go.

LIFE-ETC

By JC Snooke

The hardest thing is to let something go…especially when you have planned a shoot for 2 years and then a world pandemic hits us.

All we can do is to look out for each other, hope and pray that we come out of it safely and ready to take on a changed industry.

We planned to shoot a pilot episode for a new travel show called ‘Drop Pin’ during the end of March 2020, this entailed taking hands with a luxury partner in London, casting 4 fantastic and talented influencers, flights were booked and we received accommodation in Cape Town at a 5-star hotel. And then the bomb dropped, we had to make the call that filming this is not as important as the lives of everyone involved. Needles to say, it is postponed until further notice.

Covid-10 will be affecting everyone within the entertainment industry. All we need to do is to think cleverer about work opportunities and be more creative i.e what makes you different and what can you do to make it work?

Social-ETC and Life-ETC is filming and editing an online training course helping you to go from “Zero to Verified” with Kyle Clark (Clark Media). This will be released soon.

LIAB filmed our first documentary and we are very excited to release this. This was an absolute life changing experience to talk to people about mental illness. The Louw-Down on Depression will be an in-depth look in depression through the eyes of Louw Breytenbach.

Hope Results In Life.

FINAL THOUGHT

By Jennis Williamson

We started the year with excitement.

We started the year with goals.

We started the year with targets.

And then Covid-19 became a reality….

All of a sudden our lives changed dramatically, every possible future we dreamed of changed, and this left us with a feeling of fear, anxiety, and doubt. The agency felt this change immediately as the team has to work from home, with that other challenges…internet, transport, communication issues, load shedding etc.

I have no idea what the future will hold, nor do I know how this will affect the industry in the long run. My heart goes out to every single performer and crew member.

What I do know is that we are dealing with this change one day at a time, and we are doing this in a positive and effective manner, we are working on projects and campaigns and once this turns, we will be ready!

Till then, lets change the industry, one self tape at a time.

Sending you love, hope and light.

Jennis

CREW-ETC

We’ve hit the ground running this year and February has been a decent month by the yearly standards of a quiet January and February.

As we move into March there is a lot of excitement building. Freelancers on a number of reality shows and drama series, as well as a lot of post-production gigs happening. We’re also busy expanding with more Cape Town based freelancers, especially in the production space, which seems to be the most booming position of all.

A real exciting venture this month has been the first big project for our Intimacy Coordinators Sara Blecher and Kate Lush. They’ve been working on a new ground breaking telenovela produced by Clive Morris Productions that will be featuring a lot of intimate scenes. Seeing Sara and Kate working tirelessly towards making this first production a success has been fantastic to watch and hopefully more productions starting opting to use people of their skill level for these generally difficult scenes. It’s so much more than just being there on the day and helping actors block a sex scene, as it stretches from being involved in pre-production, checking over contracts and working with the whole crew, creating an awareness safe space for performances to flourish whilst everyone is sufficiently protected.

AFDA is also jumping on board as we facilitate workshops at their various campuses across South Africa, bringing the next generation up to speed on this new role in this industry and also making them aware of their rights on set.

All I can say is, bring on March!

SOCIAL-ETC

The next couple of months are going to be exciting for this department as we go to war to fight the stereotypes around influencer marketing and start to break the barrier around what our worth is as influencers online. We are currently working on finalizing the short course which will play a huge role in you taking your brand to where it needs to be and also focusing on making the first social media workshop an extremely successful one. The next couple of months are going to be prosperous but also a great challenge. You as an artist and online star can also start to break the barriers by knowing your worth and making sure you’re not exploited online. Email us at social@talent-etc.co.za for any direction, advice or interest regarding workshops and online courses.

What is TikTok? For those who does not know what I’m talking about- TikTok is a new app for making and sharing short videos.
Video creators have all sorts of tools at their disposal. The same way the stories and filters originated on Snapchat, this app also gives the ability to search for sounds and music to add to your video. Users are also strongly encouraged to engage with other users, through “response” videos or by means of “duets/colabs” — users can duplicate videos and add themselves alongside.

Why would a production company even talk about something like this? Well, if you have an exact look at what content are created on this app with just a camera from a cellphone, it makes me excited to see what the future holds for the film and television industry.

From a personal point of view, I get inspired by seeing all of the creative content from people all over the world. This opens my mind to new possibilities of how to create content, different ways of editing videos and what you can achieve in short videos ranging from 15 to 30 seconds. Most of the time, these kids and sometimes even adults, will post things that would blow your mind.

There is no need to post content regularly, like on Instagram or Snapchat. But create a free account and start participating in the fun that is TikTok. You can thank us later by downloading the app to see why I am so excited, or maybe just ignore our suggestion.

FINAL THOUGHT

By Jennis Williamson

February was the month of love, and also my first month back full time at the agency in capacity of Managing Director, Producer and Agent. I can honestly say, as a team we have never laughed, yet worked so hard, and that is evident in the growth of every single division at ETC from the agency, Crew-ETC, Social-ETC to Life-Etc.

Last year’s reshuffle and rebranding was worth every single cent and one year later I can proudly confess how extremely proud I am of my team, how extremely proud I am of the camaraderie we have as a collective, and especially how proud I am of our represented actors, crew members and influencers, breaking boundaries every day.

I have completely fallen in love with the ETC brand and our team.

Yes, as always, with every system firmly in place, there is much more to come, we have cemented our goals and visions for 2020, we are welcoming new team members today to provide an even better service to our artists and clients.

With new connections in Los Angeles and the UK, and even welcoming a celebrated Hollywood actor to our agency shortly, it proves that when you focus on goals as a team, anything is possible.

During March our country will also be celebrating Human Rights Day and we will celebrate the rights we have as South Africans, and the freedom we have to grow.

Happy March!

Love and Light, Jennis

2019 was a tough year for a lot of people in the industry. I myself also suffered hardships, however I used this as motivation to get this new leg going and ensure that we find exciting avenues for freelancers, whilst creating a sustainable business model. So far there have been encouraging signs that 2020 will be a much better year. With a number of jobs landed in January, we’re busy spreading the Crew-ETC gospel and have also gained a number of new clients so far. It’s all about the relationships we build with production houses and how we maintain them, all the while constantly chipping away at opening up new doors. There seem to be many exciting projects in the pipeline that will hopefully pick up speed in the near future, so watch this space, we’re about to get rocking and rolling.

In the picture below, is one of our DOP’s, Johannes Schoutsen, in the heart of the Northern Cape, busy with an intriguing documentary produced by Palama Productions – on the serious drought in South Africa. This seemed to be a very good metaphor to run with. It might be dry and there might be no rain in sight, but let’s not despair and give up hope. Let’s then build our own pipeline and get these crops growing.

With 2020 here, we reflect on the work we did in early 2019.

Klipwerf Kuiers aired on VIA with our beautiful, talented and, soon to be mom for the 2nd time, Nadia Beukes. Life in a Bulb Productions together with The Klipwerf Dans Orkes created a show where we invited the best musicians in the industry to join forces, make some food & remake a classic South African song together. It was a very successful show, however due to lack of funding and changes within the channel’s programming we were not able to create another season. Sad, but true!

Raising funds gets more challenging every year, especially for Afrikaans television. You have to think out of the box to acquire funding before you even think of taking an idea to a production company. A piece of advice for creatives this year: Keep your great idea in your pocket for a while and think ‘Money’ before you pitch up at a production company saying: “I HAVE A GREAT IDEA FOR A NEW SHOW”
